Soft Washing vs. Pressure Washing: What Is the Difference?

The two terms get used interchangeably online, but they describe genuinely different processes, and using the wrong one on the wrong surface is the single most common way a well-intentioned cleaning job turns into an expensive repair.
Pressure washing uses mechanical force — water blasted through a narrow nozzle at anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000-plus psi — to physically knock dirt, grime, and staining off a surface. It works because the surface is tough enough to take that force without damage: concrete, brick pavers, stone. Soft washing uses a completely different mechanism. A low-pressure sprayer, generally under 500 psi, applies a cleaning solution that is left to dwell and chemically break down algae, mildew, and organic growth at the root, then gets rinsed away with minimal force. The cleaning happens through chemistry and dwell time, not pressure.
That distinction is what determines which surfaces need which method. Roof shingles have a thin layer of protective granules that a pressure washer strips off at close range — once those are gone, the shingle degrades far faster in the sun, and most manufacturers explicitly exclude pressure-washing damage from their warranties. Vinyl and HardiePlank siding can crack or let water force its way behind the panels under real pressure. Wood decking will "fur" — the surface fibers raise and separate permanently — under pressure much lower than what concrete tolerates without issue. None of that is a matter of being careful with a pressure washer; it is a mismatch between the tool and the material, and it happens whether the person holding the wand is careful or not.
Concrete, pavers, and other hardscape are the exception, not the rule. These surfaces are dense enough at the top to handle real pressure, and in fact pressure — applied evenly through a rotary surface cleaner rather than a hand wand — is what actually lifts ground-in oil, rust, and algae staining that a soft wash alone would not fully remove.
This is also where most DIY pressure washing goes wrong. A rented pressure washer does not know the difference between a driveway and a roof — the operator has to. Getting the pressure, nozzle angle, and distance right for each surface takes more judgment than the rental counter conversation usually covers, and the mistakes (furred wood, stripped roof granules, water forced behind siding) are not reversible by cleaning again. A professional soft-wash setup, and the experience to know which surfaces get which treatment, is what keeps a cleaning job from becoming a repair job.
The short version: if it is organic growth on a vertical or delicate surface — roof, siding, wood, painted trim — it needs a soft wash. If it is embedded staining on a horizontal, dense surface — concrete, pavers, stone — pressure is the right call. Getting that match right on the first try is most of what separates a good exterior cleaning job from a costly one.
